White Plains Public School students took many honors in the White Plains Winter Classic Scholastic Chess tournament held last Saturday at .
The tournament was conducted by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and about 175 players from Westchester and Connecticut participated.
The White Plains Middle School Team of Taikan Nakada, Paul Rand and Julianne Tung took first place in the Reserve Section for Middle Schools. In the fourth and fifth grade Elementary Rated Section, the Ridgeway School Team of Andrew Esposito, Jake Grande, Joseph Kennedy, Alexandros Kerwick and Andrew Schick also took first place.

Ridgeway’s Kindergarten-Grade 1 Novice Players, Jake Frydman, Damien Kemna, and Grant Reising-Owen, took first place in their class. Ridgeway’s Novice Unrated Team took second place for Grades 2-3, Church Street School’s 4th-5th Grade Team took third place in the Elementary Rated Section, and Mamaroneck Avenue’s Grades 2-3 Team came in eighth in the Novice Unrated class.
Each elementary school in White Plains has a Chess Club and the district estimates that there are about 350 chess players in the schools. The next tournament will take place on January 7th at Church Street School.
