Coming Soon: Apple Cinemas Is Bringing Movies Back To White Plains

A movie star is reborn downtown after the abrupt departure of Showcase Cinemas and the popcorn will be popping sooner than you might think.

All the blockbusters will be coming to the screen, but moviegoers will notice a few changes. Apple Cinemas has a renovated lobby, reclining seats, self-serve popcorn machines and a (soon-to-open) on-site restaurant.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — It turns out that the departure of the last movie theater in downtown White Plains didn't mean the last picture show.

Apple Cinemas, a movie theater chain with 11 locations in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine is set to open a new, 80,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art movie theater complex in the former Showcase Cinema de Lux location at the White Plains City Center, located at 237 Martine Ave.

Opening Day is expected to be this Thursday, pending permit approvals.

"Our team is so excited to bring an action-packed and innovative movie experience to the City Center in White Plains," the Apple Cinemas team said. "Guests can expect the space to continue evolving over the next month with even more offerings and activities. The space will offer multiple premium auditoriums including Dolby Atmos and IMAX and an always fresh BurgerFi menu. All of this has been made possible with the support of our amazing renovation team, vendors, city officials, and team at City Center Mall."

The theater will have approximately 1,400 seats and will have both an IMAX (planned for the end of May) and an Apple Cinemas Premium Large Format ACX screen featuring 4K LASER and Dolby ATMOS 360-degree immersive sound.

The company has also partnered with IMAX to launch "IMAX with Laser," a next-gen laser projection and 12-channel sound system at the White Plains City Center location.

"White Plains loves the movies. When Showcase pulled out, our full focus was on bringing a new theater operator into the space," Mayor Tom Roach said. "Our thriving downtown worked in our favor creating a great deal of interest in the theater industry. I am pleased to welcome Apple Cinemas to our community. Apple has made significant investments in upgrading the facilities and enhancing the ticket holder experience. An exciting new chapter in the long history of entertainment in White Plains is opening. See you at the movies."

While a movie theater in the downtown White Plains shopping, restaurant and entertainment district might seem like an obvious fit, replacing the Showcase cineplex took a village, or in this case, an entire city.

"We’re pleased the movies are returning to downtown White Plains, and that that the theater, the owners of City Center and the City of White Plains were able to work together so quickly to bring film back into the heart of our commercial center," Jennifer Furioli, the Executive Director of the Downtown White Plains Business Improvement District, said. "Movie theaters are good for downtown — we’re thrilled Apple Cinemas has selected our fantastic community for their next location."
