The White Plains Historical Society invites you to its 22nd Annual Dinner.
Author Thomas B. Allen will speak on his latest book Tories, Fighting for the King in America’s First Civil War which is a narrative history of Loyalists in the American Revolution. Tories, a History Book Club selection, was described by The Economist as “an original and copiously sourced history of the war’s losers.”

The New York Times review focused on the grim side of the narrative, saying Tories is “not for the faint of heart or for those who prefer revolutions in ideas. Allen and his son Roger MacBride Allen are the authors of the National Geographic’s Mr. Lincoln’s High Tech War. The authors were chosen to take part in a Smithsonian lecture on Lincoln and Science at the National Museum of American History. The book was selected by Voice of Youth Advocates Magazine as one of the best non-fiction young adult books of 2009.
The Historical Society will honor Barbara and Paul Schwarz as its Citizens Extraordinaire. Throughout their lives in White Plains both have made a serious commitment to the betterment of our City through their dedicated involvement in community service.
Barbara is a longtime educator in the White Plains Public Schools and continues to substitute teach in retirement. Her contributions include: member of the Board of Directors and volunteer at White Plains Hospital Center and Director/Coordinator “Tuesday at Temple” senior program at Congregation Kol Ami.
Paul is a lifetime resident with a 40 year career as an English and public speaking teacher. His contributions include: President of Meals-on-Wheels in White Plains; member of Westchester County Department of Senior Programming Services’ Senior Housing and Services Coalition; participant on the board of the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services; 2009 inductee of the Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame; member of the White Plains Rotary Club and volunteer for the White Plains Youth Bureau.
Both are frequent donors/supporters of the White Plains Public Schools and White Plains Library Foundation.
