'Large Bulge' Under Hoodie Foils Porch Pirate Suspect's Caper

White Plains police were staking out an area where mobile phones had gone missing when they saw something suspicious.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Police say that a porch pirate and his accomplice were arrested after a failed attempt to evade justice.

On Friday, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division set up surveillance on North Broadway after a string of recent cell phone thefts.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., detectives saw a man, later identified as Julio A. Veras-Reyes, enter the apartment building police were watching. He later exited the building with a large bulge underneath his hoodie, according to cops.

After a brief foot chase, Veras-Reyes was placed into custody and a FedEx package addressed to a resident was recovered, police said. Veras-Reyes' accomplice and driver, Julio C. Veras Goneel, was apprehended in front of the building, and the vehicle he was operating was impounded.

Both suspects, who are Bronx residents, were charged and held for arraignment.

Veras-Reyes was arrested for burglary in the second degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, and petit larceny. Veras Goneel was arrested for burglary in the second degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree and aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree.
