Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Volunteering With Older Adults

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Volunteer Open House & Info Session
Ever wanted to volunteer with older adults but you weren't sure what type of activity to try? Join DOROT Westchester and other prospective volunteers at its New Volunteer Open House and Information Session. Learn about the many volunteer programs available, such as package delivery, friendly visits, and other activities to bring meaningful, social connections to older adults throughout Westchester County. Sign up solo or with a friend, family member, or group. This opportunity is for volunteers age 18+ only.
Date: 10/18 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Warner Library Fall Book Sale
Volunteers are needed to help make the Fall Book Sale at the Warner Library in Tarrytown a success. Volunteers can help carry boxes of books to the tents and assist with set-up as well as carry boxes of unsold books into the library as part of the break-down of the event. This is the perfect opportunity for student groups or colleagues who want to enjoy a fun activity outside of office hours. Community service credit can be provided if needed.
Date: 10/21 from 8-10 a.m. and 10/22 from 5-7 p.m.

Fall Food Drives
Your Life at 10 is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring happiness to the underprivileged population by giving them access to the tools that will help them obtain an optimal mental state to cultivate happiness. It is hosting a Bowl-A-Thon to raise funds for its "Happiness for All" program. Volunteers are needed to assist with setup, cleanup, and to check-in participants as they arrive.

Academic Mentors for Elementary School Kids - Ossining
Volunteer Mentors are needed to help elementary-aged children at Ossining schools build their reading skills during weekly one-on-one sessions. Volunteers will be matched with a student and provided with reading materials and worksheets. This is an ideal opportunity for students who are 16+, retirees and seniors who can make a commitment for the entire school year.
Date: Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. through June 2024
