WHITE PLAINS, NY — A state of emergency was declared for Westchester County Friday.

County Executive George Latimer made the announcement because of heavy rain and flooding.

He said the region is facing a significant and potentially life-threatening weather event. Dangerous rainfall has been impacting the area and is expected to continue, leading to concerns of flash flooding and hazardous conditions.

“I am taking this step to ensure the security, well-being and health of our citizens during this challenging time,” Latimer said.

“The severe storm has created hazardous conditions,” he said, “and we are committed to providing all necessary assistance to address the threats to public health and safety.”

Meteorologists said rain has at times fallen at 1 to 2.5 inches per hour since earlier morning Friday.
