Collapsed Williamsburg Building Buries 2 People

Firefighters say they were able to find and remove the victims, still alive, after half an hour of digging.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Two people were pulled from the soil beneath a Williamsburg apartment building Monday morning after the building’s basement caved in on them, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Firefighters rushed to the three-story apartment building at 146 Wilson Street, in the Orthodox Jewish area of Williamsburg, around 9:15 a.m. They dug for more than half an hour to remove the victims from the soil, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

The two buried victims were taken to Woodhull Hospital in upper Bed-Stuy in non-critical condition. A third victim injured in the collapse was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, also in non-critical condition.

By 10:30 a.m., investigators from the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) had arrived to the collapse site to assess the stability of the building, which was still standing.

146 Wilson and the two buildings on either side of it were evacuated Monday while the DOB investigated.
