PHOTOS: Fascist 'Trump' Graffiti Spotted on Brooklyn Nature Walk
Greenpoint's Newtown Creek Nature Walk was defaced with swastikas and other white supremacist graffiti, a witness said.
GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — A Greenpoint resident on Thursday spotted a picnic table along the idyllic Newtown Creek Nature Walk that was defaced with graffiti of a swastika, and writing that said "Trump," "Go home refugees," and "rapeugees not welcome."
Willis Elkins said he got a tip on Twitter about the hateful graffiti went to the path to see for himself. Elkins took photos and posted them to Facebook, eliciting fury from other residents. He also reported the graffiti to the Department of Environmental Protection, which owns the park.
"It is disheartening to see expressions of xenophobia anywhere, but especially in your backyard," Elkins told Patch in an email. "I really cherish the Nature Walk as a public space that not only incorporates nature into an industrial area, but pays homage to the indigenous cultures that lived here before. There is some irony that in a city of immigrants, someone can proudly promote white supremacy and that refugees should 'go home'. Drawing swastikas on a park bench; its disgraceful and people shouldn't give a pass to ignorant hate."

The Newton Creek Nature Walk is a quarter-mile-long trail along Newtown Creek east of the Greenpoint G stop in Greenpoint. It was designed by environmental sculpture artist George Trakas as a place to learn about wastewater treatment, water quality, and the history of NYC along the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.
