A loud, chaotic shootout between a robbery suspect and a mob of NYPD officers in Bushwick near Bed-Stuy on Thursday night was caught on tape by a Nest Cam mounted on a nearby resident’s home. (Video embedded below.)
The dramatic episode began at 1:10 a.m. early Friday morning, police said, when two plainclothes officers patrolling the area came across a 52-year-old man who’d been shot in the arm at 1266 Madison Street during a botched robbery attempt.

The gunshot victim was in the process giving the two officers a description of the man who’d shot him, police said, when they spotted the suspect running by.

Here’s what happened next, according to an NYPD statement:
“The officers canvassed the area and encountered the suspect on Jefferson Avenue between Evergreen Avenue and Bushwick Avenue. At this time, the suspect turned towards the officers and discharged his firearm multiple times, striking the officer’s vehicle. The sergeant and officer returned fire, and a foot pursuit ensued.“
Additional backup officers soon arrived to join the chase.
In all, the officers reportedly fired more than 80 bullets on the robbery and shooting suspect, who has since been identified as Jerrol Harris, 27, a Brownsville resident with a long criminal history.
According to the New York Daily News, “the running gun battle came to a head when Harris opened fire with a [stolen pistol], discharging at least six shots at two cops using their parked patrol car to cut off his escape route.”
No officers were injured in the shootout. (Although six of them were sent to the hospital with “tinnitus,” or loud ringing in their ears, the NYPD said.)
Harris was the only person hit by a bullet during the shootout. He was downed in the street by a single bullet to his left calf, police said, and is now recovering at Kings County Hospital Center down in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
“A .40 caliber Taurus Millennium firearm was recovered at the location next to the suspect,” police said.
The bright red pants Harris was wearing that night helped police stay on his tail, the Daily News reported.
Harris is listed in stable condition. And his alleged shooting victim — the 52-year-old man who officers originally found in the street — is also in stable condition at Elmhurst General Hospital in Queens, police said.
The suspect is now facing the following charges, according to the NYPD.
- Attempted Murder (2nd Degree)
- Assault
- Criminal Use of a Firearm
- 4 Counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer
- 1 Count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon
- 4 Counts of Menacing a Police Officer
- 4 Counts of Reckless Endangerment
