Brooklyn Herborium Opens In Windsor Terrace: Patch Q&A

The organic and herbal skincare shop opened Saturday.

WINDSOR TERRACE, BROOKLYN — Brooklyn Herborium, an organic and herbal skincare shop started by two Brooklyn moms, opened a new store in Windsor Terrace on Saturday.

It's the second brick-and-mortar location for the makers of safe and all natural skincare products for adults and kids. The location will serve as a production facility and a storefront for their products and eventually offer in-person skincare treatments.

Patch stopped by on Saturday afternoon and chatted with co-founder Emma Graves. A transcript of the conversation, lightly edited for clarity and concision, is below:

Are you a business that's new to the neighborhood or on its way? We'd love to hear from you.

Patch: Tell us a little bit about how you got started.

Graves: I started in skincare in 1997 and worked for Origins, and as much as it was a big company, it was one of the only meant-to-be natural companies at the time, even if it's not as natural as things are now. In 2004 I became a licensed esthetician and started doing facials. At one point in 2006, I got my idea to make a product line that was based in American herbs and local herbs but using it in a way that was supportive to the skin. So that was the initial idea for the line which I started in 2006 and started using with my clients in 2008. And that's when I first opened my first shop. (Co-founder Molly Watman) is a graphic designer, she's amazing, she's the one who really focuses on how to take my ideas and bring them to people.

Patch: What separates your products from others?

Graves: The number one thing is that we're working with what the body naturally wants to do rather than try to stop that. And as much as that seems like such a normal good idea, almost normally everything out there doesn't fall under that category.

Patch: What else are you offering here?

Graves: We've got home goods and basically the foods that we recommend for good health and beautiful skin.

Patch: Why Windsor Terrace?

Graves: Because we both live in walkable distance, which is really helpful. And the space was available and beautiful. We just love it here.
