Cortelyou Road Gets $25K "Placemaking" Grant

A merchants directory, fall-themed sidewalk event and a holiday shop local campaign are just some of the plans for a $25,000 "Placemaking" grant that is coming to Cortelyou Road.

The grant is provided by the city's office of Small Business Services with the goal of promoting economic development on Cortelyou Road through events and projects that encourage people to see the avenue as a destination as well as a convenience.

"The idea is for the merchants to get more foot traffic, for people to come in not just from the neighborhood but from beyond the neighborhood," said Laura Burgess of the Flatbush Development Corporation.

If you're already picturing streetlight banners and holiday lights, you're not alone. But such endeavors are not supported by this particular grant. Instaed the money is supposed to be used for impermanent projects such as printing up a merchants directory or planning street-fair-type activities.

In the fall event, merchants will participate, perhaps by offering food samples or discounts.

We'll give you further updates as plans firm up.
