Golden Farm Fights Back

It seems Golden Farm has a protest of its own.

A set of articles slamming New York Communities for Change—the labor group that helped organize a suit against Golden Farm owner Sonny Kim—have been posted in the grocery store's doorway, presumably in quiet retaliation for a "" held last week to raise awareness for the store's now notoriously underpaid workers.

The articles—one from Fox News printed last October, the other from the New York Post printed last January—both charge NYCC is the new incarnation of the now defunct community activist group ACORN, which disbanded in 2010 following a controversial video sting.

Whoever posted the articles also highlighted a couple of sentences in each, pointing specifically to allegations that NYCC recruited people from homeless shelters to support Occupy Wall Street protests, paying them $10 an hour to do so.

George Jang, a Golden Farm employee, said that the articles were posted on behalf of "the entire store." He added that the store's manager was not available for comment, as he is currently in the hospital.

Lucas Sanchez, an organizer with NYCC, said he's familiar with the articles, but isn't fazed by their message.

"Fox News and the Post don’t like the fact that our organization works to empower communities of color, and this is how they respond," he said, adding that "anyone who takes reporting by Fox and the Post seriously— that’s hard to imagine."

On Saturday, NYCC worked with community members to organize a 24-hour boycott of the store, in which a handful of volunteers manned Golden Farm's doors and urged shoppers to buy their groceries elsewhere. According to NYCC organizer Julian Morales, more than 600 people opted not to enter the store, choosing instead to head to nearby Walgreens or the New McDonald Fruit Corner.
