Kensington Plaza to be Unveiled on Sunday

The long-anticipated plaza will soon become a reality.

Right now, the space in front of on Beverley Road and Church Avenue is just a big expanse of empty sidewalk. On Sunday, it will be transformed into the new Kensington Plaza, complete with benches, granite blocks and additional trees.

Councilman Brad Lander, D-Park Slope, worked with community members to help spearhead the project, which aims to provide a nice gathering space for Kensington residents.

Over the course of the next week, the plaza will become home to four benches, two granite blocks and three additional trees, as well as high visibility crosswalks painted across Beverley Road. replacing the faulty, poorly-bonded stuff that long created a slipping hazard for pedestrians.

While the transformation will occur almost overnight, the plans for the space . A visioning session held in February by the Department of Transportation, which conceived the design, enabled residents to weigh in on what types of features they wanted to see.

Lander said Sunday's unveiling is an exciting first step, but that his office is still seeking resident's opinions regarding what will best work for the space in the future.

"There’s been a lot of input from the community and lots of community dialogue about it, but it’s also a work in progress," he told Patch.

"As we see how the different elements work, and people have feedback, there will be some room to make adjustments as we see how it's working."

A ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the plaza's arrival is scheduled for Sunday, June 3 at 12:30 p.m. in front of Walgreens at Beverley Road and Church Avenue.
