Making Noise for Golden Farm

Golden Farm's is officially underway.

Around 50 soaked supporters showed up outside the embattled grocery store on Sunday afternoon, kicking off seven days of awareness-raising for the plight of store's workers, who are currently embroiled in a legal battle with store owner Sonny Kim.

Organizers with New York Communities for Change were at it again on Monday, banging on everything from plastic tubs to cheese graters in attempt to inspire interest in shoppers.

While most passersby were receptive to the message, they were unsure whether they would actually be able to help in any meaningful way.

Maia Hartman, a Windsor Terrace resident, said that though she signed the petition supporting the workers, she will likely continue to shop at the store.

"There’s only one store in the neighborhood," she said. "I don’t like it, but I have no choice."

Elina Duchovny, of Kensington, said that while the situation with Golden Farm is unfortunate, its employees' struggles likely mirror those of countless other stores in the area.

“I’m not surprised," she said. "These people work really, really hard. They should have the same opportunities as everybody else. But I think in the back of my mind we know what the situation is. It’s really not a secret."
