The Early Word: The 66th Precinct Has a New Commanding Officer

What you need to know, pre-coffee.

1.The 66th Precinct has a new top cop: Deputy Inspector Michael Deddo has stepped in as the precinct's new commanding officer, replacing Deputy Inspector John L. Sprague, who has taken a position on Staten Island. Make your introductions tonight at the monthly community council meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Community Board 12 office at 5910 13th Ave. 

2. is holding its second annual Spring Dance and Auction on Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Admission is $10, and attendees will have the chance to bid on a wide array of goods, from a two-night stay at a local bed and breakfast to Yankees tickets. The event will be held in the school's cafeteria, which is accessible from the corner of Ft. Hamilton Pkwy and East 5th Street. All proceeds go to the P.S. 130 PTA.

3. Kensington's own Compost for Brooklyn got a shout-out on National Geographic's website as part of a piece on projects that aim to make New York City more sustainable. Check it out here.

4. May is "Better Hearing and Speech Month" (who knew?), making it a fine time to have your child's articulation assessed for free by a local speech specialist. Screenings will be available for children ages 3-years and up on Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DeMoor Speech Therapy, located at 207 Prospect Park Southwest.
