VIDEO: Here's What Happens When a Jew and a Muslim Hold Hands in Brooklyn and Queens
New York City has a staring problem.
BOROUGH PARK, BROOKLYN — This month in socially conscious YouTube street experiments, we've got a slam-dunk recipe for viraldom: Two sets of men and women, dressed like religious Jews and Muslims, wandering around a mixed Jewish-Muslim area of Astoria, Queens, and the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park, Brooklyn, to see how passerby will react.
A wide range of reactions (listed below) are caught on camera by a guy trailing the couples. Some are horrible; some are heartwarming.
The only constant: Everybody in Astoria and Borough Park has a serious staring problem.

Astoria
- Some woman yells "F*ck you!" and raises her middle finger.
- A guy in a group of other guys says: "This is so wrong on so many levels. That's the wrong picture." His friend adds: "You're making Islam look bad." And another friend adds: "That's a war! Try this in Brooklyn." (See below.)
- An older Muslim man says: "We're cousins for a long time, right? So we have to live our life. We believe in God. We believe in Moses. We believe in Jesus. A Muslim, before he was Muslims, he was Jewish. ... Now he's Muslim. What's the difference?"
- One of the couples comes across a Jewish man and a Muslim man having tea together. They don't understand what the big deal is. "My wife is Jewish, so..." the Muslim man says.
- A young Muslim woman in secular clothing runs up to one of the couples and tells them: "To see this is like, amazing. Hands down to you. High five."

- An Orthodox Jewish man yells, "How'd you find her!?"
- Another Jewish man in a crowd says: "A f*ggot! You don't see a f*ggot? ... He's a f*ggot and another f*ggot and another stupid Muslim." Some other guy in the crowd yells: "That's what you are — a terrorist!"
- Someone throws a water bottle at one of the couples near 15th Avenue and 53rd Street.
- A young Orthodox Jewish man says: "I think Jews and Arabs can be friends. Everybody should be friends. ... I think we should make peace. I think everybody should make peace."
- Another guy on the street calls the sight of a Muslim and a Jew walking together "highly liberating."
- A local restaurant worker in secular clothing says it's "a sign of peace."
- An Orthodox dad with his young son says, matter of fact: "It's good, as long as you don't fight. As long as you get along."
Amen.
