Will You Shop at the New Walgreens?

Hundreds of residents turned out to Holy Name of Jesus Church on Thursday night slated to take over the space at 589 Prospect Avenue, once .

But with Ballard Pharmacy and Oak Park Pharmacy—both located on Prospect Park West—already serving the area, many community members vowed to boycott the forthcoming Walgreens, tentatively slated to open in March of next year.

Some residents touted the idea of starting a Windsor Terrace food co-op to offset the need to shop at Walgreens. One audience member pitched the idea that Walgreens could sublet some of the expansive property to a dedicated supermarket.

Others will rely on shuttle service to and from Fairway Market in Red Hook, and still others hope to forge a service wherein residents with cars offer rides to those without to other nearby grocery stores.

While it's not completely certain whether the Walgreens' deal is done—the representative sent to Thursday's meeting, Hien Nguyen, admitted that he was "not 100 percent sure"—it is clear that Windsor Terrace residents are prepared to fight to keep the community chain-free.
