ICYMI: Windsor Terrace Library Getting New 'Green' Roof

WINDSOR TERRACE, BROOKLYN — The Windsor Terrace Public Library is getting a new "green" roof, with grass and plants that will attract birds and other critters while helping with storm runoff and making the library more energy efficient.

This project is the reason behind the "roof repairs" that the library's website has alluded to, which will cause the branch to close on Monday, March 13. The library plans to reopen on Monday, April 10 while work on the roof finishes up.

The roof will be funded using the $250,000 of participatory budgeting that community members voted to spend on the library upgrades, according to a library press release.

“This project was recognized and supported by the very community the library serves through the PB process,” Council Member Brad Lander said in the release. “The sustainable green roof will provide tremendous benefits to the community—from helping to improve air quality to providing a wildlife habitat. Without a doubt, it shows the incredible environmental leadership by the Windsor Terrace Library.”

The roof will feature "extensive plantings, including shrubs, perennial groundcovers, and ornamental grasses like sedum, witchhazel, butterfly weed, and carolina rose that will attract birds and other pollinators," the release said.

Those elements, the release said, will "reduce stormwater runoff and make the building more energy efficient by reducing the amount of heat it absorbs during the day and releases at night."

To help make up for the lack of library during that time, one of the Brooklyn Public Libraries four Bookmobiles will be outside the location on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Wednesday, March 15.
