Are NYers Less Satisfied With Their Lives Than 1 Year Ago? — POLL

A recent Siena College Research Institute poll found out that satisfaction is heading south.

NEW YORK — Are you more satisfied with life in New York than you were a year ago?

That is the question asked in a recent Siena College Research Institute poll, and it turns out that satisfaction is heading south.

They found that only 27 percent of New Yorkers are more satisfied with their lives than they were a year ago, while 33 percent are less satisfied and 39 percent are as satisfied.

Compare that to 2018 when Siena asked the same question. Back then, 44 percent were more satisfied with their lives, with 17 percent reported being less satisfied.

Don Levy, director of the Siena College Research Institute, said it's been a trying time for many New Yorkers, and he chalks it up to three things.

"In 2018, we noted a decline in New Yorkers life satisfaction from 2008 when we first asked these questions," he said, "but after COVID, political turmoil and now inflation, we see a significant drop among state residents in every category of life satisfaction."

Levy said the poll showed, while overall satisfaction has fallen for both men and women, women today are less satisfied with their lives than are men, which is a change from 2018.

Where men saw an increase in satisfaction with recreational activities and friends and acquaintances, no area among women measured an increased satisfaction over four years — with the largest decline in family relationships perhaps due to COVID-19 keeping people apart.

Women also said they had less satisfaction than men with their financial condition, work, health, relationship with a life partner and the direction of the world.

The Siena College Poll was conducted June 14-27 by calling 802 New York adults. The overall margin of error is ±3.7 percentage points.
