YORKTOWN, NY — It's playtime in Yorktown, and safety improvements are an important part of the fun.

Yorktown inaugurated a new children's playground last Wednesday at Blackberry Woods, with a colorful jungle gym and a swing set by Miracle Recreation. Officials say the new gear, installed by Liberty Parks and Playgrounds, is set atop a soft surface in order to minimize fall injuries to small children.

"I've been very committed over my term to making sure that we have great facilities," Supervisor Ed Lachterman said. "We’ve been working on a lot of different projects, our pools, our parks. We know that we're leaving our town for our kids."

The Yorktown Recreation Commission approved the playground renovation earlier this year, at a cost of $47,593.20.

"This project is all about getting ready for this next generation of youngsters," Parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr. said. "The parents and children of this community came to our Recreation Commission meeting, where they pushed for this project. Without their support, I don't think we would have been able to get to the finish line and be here today."

In addition to this lastest public park improvement, Yorktown opened a rehabilitated pickleball facility last month with six courts with new, high-quality court surfaces, fresh painting, durable 8-foot-high fencing, and overhead lighting allowing for night games.

"It's another great project, another great playground, and another great neighborhood of people with a lot of little ones who are going to be using it," Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito said.
