Damaging Winds, Snow Possible As Cold Front Moves Through HV

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Enjoy the calm, dry weather for Tuesday, but don’t get too used to it.

On Wednesday, rain and winds move into the region, with some wind gusts reaching 50 mph.

For the northernmost part of the Hudson Valley, there is a hazardous weather outlook.

The National Weather Service said, for Columbia, Ulster and Dutchess counties, wind gusts up to 40 to 50 mph are possible Wednesday into Thursday.

That could lead to some downed trees and tree limbs and power outages. Unsecured objects could be blown around.

Meteorologists said wind advisories may be needed if conditions get worse.

With the precipitation — and cold temperatures — there could also be accumulating snow for portions of the western and southern Adirondacks, the weather service said.

The cold front bringing in the winds is also ushering in rain.

According to Hudson Valley Weather, the rain will arrive between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday from west to east throughout the region.

Amounts are forecast to range between slightly less than half an inch in downslope regions with up to 1 inch to 1.5 inches across southern facing slopes of the higher terrain.

Rain will be moderate to heavy during the day Wednesday, Hudson Valley Weather said.

Here is the forecast through Wednesday for northern Westchester:

  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 45. Light and variable wind.
  • Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. Light southeast wind.
  • Wednesday: Showers, mainly after 10am. High near 57. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 30. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. West wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.
