On Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, parents and caregivers throughout the community are invited to a free screening of the documentary film “Race to Nowhere” at the Yorktown High School auditorium at 7 p.m.

This film “is a call to action for families, educators and policymakers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.”

Florence O’Connor, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and professional personnel said the Yorktown school district administration, the council of PTAs and the Alliance for Safe Kids are working together to provide this opportunity.

"We view it as an important way to stimulate thinking and discussion about how to support students regarding balancing choices for time with family, rest, school coursework and extracurricular activities,” she said.

Theresa Ryan-Onatzevitch, President of the Yorktown Council of PTAs said, “We are excited to collaborate with the YCSD and ASK to bring this thought-provoking documentary to Yorktown. We hope the film will launch a meaningful dialogue among members of our community as to how we can best support our children in all aspects of their lives.”

Lisa Tomeny, Coalition Coordinator for The Alliance for Safe Kids, added, "Often the focus on keeping our children safe is associated with avoiding physical dangers. This documentary draws attention to the hidden dangers that affect our children’s lives and the need for us as parents, teachers, and the community at large to safeguard their health and happiness."
