Yorktown High School Dance Company Share Their Love of Dance At the Annual Dance Show February 4 and 5

After months of rigorous rehearsals, the Yorktown High School Dance Company will perform a dance show on Friday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.

There will be a 7:30 p.m. performance on both Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. In addition, there will be a free performance for local senior citizens on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 2:30 p.m.

The performance consists of 26 dances. The opening number will feature the entire company performing in 19 different styles of dance to the song “Empire State of Mind.”

The repertoire is comprised of various genres, including ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Bollywood, Broadway, Irish, African, Latin(cha-cha), hustle, swing, Hawaiian, step, kick line, lyrical, disco and break dance. The company is comprised of more than 100 students in grades 9-12.

Each spring, choreographers are selected to choreograph various pieces to be considered for the followingyear’s show. At the start of the school year, each dance must be approved by the Director, Veronica Dwyer.

Auditions are held for new members and rehearsals begin in October. Most dancers are expected to rehearse for several hours after school each day until the public performances.

The performances are directed and produced by Health Education teacher Veronica Dwyer, who founded the Company 37 years ago.

The costume manager is Marguerite Nelson; her son, John, provided graphic design for the opening number. Show lighting was designed by Kevin Gleason; music was edited byAriana Aboulafia and Jon Kadela. Montage was created by Ariana Aboulafia. Betsy Musso is the auditorium manager and Leo Sposato is the Tech Crew advisor. Teacher Gerri Kreppel and many alumni return annually to lend a helping hand.

Tickets for reserved seating are $15.00 and will go on sale in the High School lobby on Monday, Jan. 31 through Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 9:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Tickets will also be sold from Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.
