HUDSON VALLEY, NY — It’s time to protect any plants you bought recently thinking that cold weather has gone away for the spring and summer.

The National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings for parts of the Hudson Valley.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties, the warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday.

For Columbia, Ulster and Dutchess counties, the warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. They could possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Tender plants need to be protected from the cold.

To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly.

In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained and above-ground pipes should be covered.
