The Yorktown Town Board released a tentative budget with record increases in garbage taxes and large expenditures of fund balance. But this budget was released with no completed audit of the Town's finances since at least 2021. The ‘A New Day for Yorktown’ slate is calling for the New York State Comptroller to audit Yorktown’s finances.

The ‘A New Day for Yorktown’ slate, composed of Jann Mirchandani (running for Town Supervisor), Diana Quast (running for re-election as Yorktown Town Clerk), Steve Shaw and Tom Marron (running for Town Council) are challenging Tom Diana and the Town Board in next week’s election. The ‘A New Day’ slate have called repeatedly for financial transparency and responsibility, highlighting the concerns of Yorktown’s residents through their assertive 6 month campaign.

Jann Mirchandani said: “This tentative budget is irresponsible. It proposes to spend fund balance to offset garbage taxes, even to offset a general tax increase. But the Board doesn’t know if the money is there to pay these bills. The Board is risking our bond rating, and the tax bills of Yorktown’s property owners to play political theater just days before election day. It’s time for the State Comptroller to get involved - Yorktown needs answers.”

Tom Marron said: “We have asked this Board for answers repeatedly through our campaign. Every time, anything that comes out of Town Hall raises more questions than answers. This budget is the last straw. Yorktown is in a precarious position and we need hard answers. It’s time for the State Comptroller to step in.”

Steve Shaw said: “It’s been one thing after another. Residents have been asking about the fund balance since September. Now, we can see that Tom Diana and the Town Board have been playing politics with our finances, and it’s time for the State to step in. Yorktown needs the full picture, not half-finished reports and politicians patting each other on the back for getting the job done.”

The ‘A New Day for Yorktown Slate’ is pushing through as this year’s election continues to unfold: Early voting began Saturday, October 28th and will run through Sunday, November 5th. Election day is Tuesday, November 7th.
