Yorktown Places Liens to Collect Unpaid Taxes
The town of Yorktown is owed about $2.07 million in unpaid property taxes for 2011

The town of Yorktown is owed about $2.07 million in unpaid property taxes for 2011, according to tax receiver Elfriede H. Schmid.
The number of unpaid taxes for 2011 was down slightly from 2010, when it was about $2.09 million.
This time each year Schmid completes the process of cleaning up the town's books, which includes putting local delinquent taxpayers on notice. Placing a lien, which is required by law, starts the foreclosure period during which time homeowners have up to three years to pay the taxes they owe.

"Historically, we don't have that many foreclosures," Schmid said, adding there have been no recent foreclosures.
Town attorney Jeannette Koster said the town is still in the process of filing the foreclosure notices issued in 2009.

"Since the administration changed, we're not as aggressive," Schmid said.
To avoid being foreclosed on, property owners can either come up with the money, for both back and current taxes, or enter an with the town. The rules are strict and include interest and late fees.
, one of the highest amount of back taxes owed to the town was by Trump Park – the development is owned by Cappelli Enterprises and they had not paid $1,278,877 in back taxes for 2009, 2010, and 2011. They later paid off their taxes.
