Man Who Shot 3 Deputies Found Dead After 9-Hour Standoff In Rural North Carolina

One of the deputies was in critical condition, and two were stable. The suspected shooter also fatally shot himself, authorities said.

DUDLEY, NC — A man believed to have shot three sheriff’s deputies Monday in rural Wayne County is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a roughly nine-hour standoff with police, authorities said.

The deputies were serving involuntary commitment paperwork mid-morning Monday at a residence in the 2500 block of Arrington Bridge Road in Dudley when they were met with gunfire, according to Wayne County.

Sgt. Matthew Fishman, 38; Cpl. Andrew Cox, 37; and Deputy Alexander Ramon Torres, 27, remained hospitalized Monday night at ECU Health Medical Center in Vidant, authorities said. Fishman was in critical condition, but Cox and Torres were stable, according to the county.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Monday, a SWAT team breached the home and found the body of the suspected shooter, 33-year-old Jourdan Hamilton, authorities said. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
