Here are the top three stories in Asheville today:
- On May 2, the Asheville Police Department (APD) found 18 shell casings while investigating a report of a gun discharge along the 380 block of Brooklyn Road in South Asheville. Authorities said there have been no reports of property damage and no injuries. The police department asks anyone with information on this incident to contact APD at (828) 252-1110. (WLOS)
- A press release from City of Asheville officials warned drivers of upcoming road work in the downtown area. The Public Works Stormwater Division will close Hill Street from Montford Avenue to 135 Hill St. to work on stormwater culvert replacements. The road will be closed nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 .a.m. from May 7 through May 13, dependent on the weather. (WLOS)
- On May 1, Asheville police arrested and charged 26-year-old Jamel Marquis Fisher with felony accessory in connection to the January death of Mackenzie McCord Strickland. On Jan. 18, Strickland was found with several fatal gunshot wounds on Southern Street and police arrested 27-year-old Cody Lee Guyton the following day for first-degree murder. The ongoing investigation led to Fisher's arrest, who was also charged with carrying a concealed gun during his arrest. (WSPA)

- The City of Asheville is seeking public input regarding the College Patton Bike Lane Project design from now through Jun. 5. All responses will remain anonymous and can be submitted through an online survey. (City of Asheville)
- According to a May 2 Tweet from the District Attorney's Office for Buncombe County, a man from Asheville pleaded guilty to several charges, including second-degree rape and battery of an unborn child. In February 2022, Manuel Joel Bates was arrested by Asheville police in connection to a 2018 sexual assault case. The attorney's office said Bates will serve 88-166 months in prison and register as a sex offender for life. (WLOS)
