Here are the top three stories today in Asheville:
- Oscar Wong, the visionary behind Highland Brewing, was recently awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award by the governor in recognition of his pivotal role in creating Asheville's thriving craft beer industry. As a tribute to his accomplishments, a bronze plaque will be permanently installed on Barley's Taproom building, symbolizing the birthplace of Asheville's renowned craft beer scene. The dedication ceremony will be held on May 16 at the Asheville Art Museum. (ABC 13 News)
- In an effort to combat achievement gaps in low to middle-income households, Asheville City Council has approved a funding allocation of over $350,000 to six local agencies. Dr. Tiece Ruffin, chair of education at UNC Asheville, advocates for a comprehensive overhaul of the education system to tackle long-standing inequities. Ruffin emphasizes the significance of community engagement and alternative assessment methods to promote student achievement beyond the current curriculum. (Spectrum Local News)
- In a strong show of solidarity, several organizations organized a rally in Asheville to stand against recent legislation in North Carolina targeting transgender youths. Planned Parenthood of Asheville and four other groups hosted the event to bring attention to the difficulties faced by transgender individuals.
