• Suspect released from hospital, charged in shooting at Concord Tree Lighting (cbs17.com) — Concord residents are learning more about the recent tree lighting shooting as an 18-year-old suspect, now released from the hospital, faces multiple felony charges alongside another teen. Four people were hurt, including a 17-year-old girl now recovering, and both named suspects are being held without bond in Cabarrus County Jail.
   

• NC inventor/former teacher's 3D-printed tiles are helping children learn to read (northcarolinahealthnews.org) — A Concord, N.C. educator-turned-inventor is filling her dining room with 3D printers to produce tactile reading tiles that help children, including those with disabilities, connect letters, sounds, and words. Her OTTER Reading system, rooted in structured literacy principles, is gaining traction as North Carolina grapples with low reading proficiency rates, offering local teachers and families a hands-on tool to support struggling readers.
   

• Earnings indicator launched on FAFSA. How many NC institutions are flagged for students? (ednc.org) — Concord families should know that Empire Beauty School-Concord is among 27 North Carolina institutions flagged for “lower earnings” in a new federal FAFSA tool that compares graduates’ pay to high school graduates. The indicator, based on federal earnings data, now appears in students’ FAFSA submission summaries and can be filtered in an online spreadsheet to see how every NC school stacks up.
