Durham is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Durham has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Durham is known as the "Bull City" because of its history in tobacco production. In the late 1800s, the city became a major producer of Bull Durham Tobacco, and the iconic bull image is still found throughout the city today.
  • The Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) is one of the top performing arts centers in the country, hosting Broadway shows, concerts, comedy acts and more. The center is located in the American Tobacco Historic District, which is a great place to grab a bite to eat or take a stroll.
  • Durham is home to Duke University, one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the world. It was founded in 1838 and has since become a major hub for research and innovation.
  • The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is a minor league baseball stadium that has been voted the "best ballpark in the minors" by Baseball America. The park is home to the Durham Bulls, a team made famous by the movie Bull Durham, and is a great place to catch a game in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
  • Durham has a rich African American history, with places like the Hayti Heritage Center preserving the legacy of Black Wall Street. The center showcases the history and culture of Durham's Black community through exhibits, events and educational programs.
