1. ‘Heartwarming': Donated hygiene products replenished for Durham Public Schools students after theft (cbs17.com) — After most of Durham Public Schools’ donated hygiene supplies were stolen, residents, nonprofits, and businesses have quickly refilled the shelves with everything from shampoo to toothpaste. Donations are pouring into the DPS Bacon Street building and First Calvary Baptist Church, with WellCare of North Carolina pledging to fully replace the stolen items. The district plans tighter storage security while continuing to support students in need.
   

2. Task force meth sting nabs Durham man in home near school, deputies say (cbs17.com) — A multi-agency task force arrested a 20-year-old resident after a controlled meth delivery to a home on Ivy Street in Durham, just steps from KIPP Durham College Prep. Deputies say they seized about a kilogram of meth and filed multiple trafficking and school-zone drug charges. The suspect is being held without bond at the Durham County Detention Facility.
   

3. Durham man linked to stolen vehicles, fire, and safecracking in Chatham County (chathamjournal.com) — A Durham resident has been charged in connection with several August vehicle thefts, a safecracking attempt, and a vehicle fire in Chatham County. Investigators say warrants are issued but not yet served, and they’re asking anyone who knows the man’s whereabouts to contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office or 911.
   

4. Preparations underway as arctic air inches closer to central NC (abc11.com) — As arctic air moves into central North Carolina, Durham Rescue Mission is opening Operation Rescue: Warm Shelter so anyone can escape dangerous overnight cold. Local doctors share tips on layering, spotting hypothermia, and checking on vulnerable neighbors, while a Durham auto shop owner urges drivers to prep batteries, fluids, and emergency car kits before temperatures plunge.
   

5. NC isn't waiting for FEMA. DEQ is testing nature-based ways to prevent flooding (heraldsun.com) — A Durham-based Environmental Defense Fund leader helped conceive a major nature-based flooding project in Goldsboro that North Carolina just completed without FEMA funding. The Wayne Community College retention pond and wetland system is a pilot for watershed-scale solutions to increasingly intense storms, and could shape similar resilience projects that affect Durham and other communities statewide.
