📰 News we're reading
• Firefighter makes another bid for bond reduction on arson charge (wral.com) — A Durham firefighter is asking a judge to sharply reduce his $200,000 bond after being charged with arson and domestic violence related to a November house fire involving his family. His attorneys say he has no criminal history, experienced a psychiatric episode, and that his wife and mother-in-law will support his claim that he didn’t intend harm. He remains on leave from the Durham Fire Department while the case continues.

• Vatican publishes ‘We Believe in One God: 60 Years of Methodists and Catholics Walking Together' (thedialog.org) — Durham gets a quiet but notable nod in a new Vatican-published book, co-introduced by Duke Divinity School dean Edgardo Colón-Emeric. The volume sums up 60 years of Catholic-Methodist dialogue on topics like the Eucharist, Scripture, and ongoing debates over issues such as women’s ordination and same-sex marriage, aiming to make this work more accessible to everyday believers.

• Book Talk: Alice Gerrard — Custom Made Woman (popville.com) — Durham readers may appreciate that Alice Gerrard once based her influential roots-music magazine, The Old-Time Herald, right here in town while serving as editor-in-chief for 16 years. Her new book, Custom Made Woman, traces her decades-long bluegrass and old-time career, collaborations with icons like Hazel Dickens, and rare photos documenting a still-thriving American musical tradition.
