The Cumberland County Mayors Coalition held its first meeting of 2022 on Feb. 4 at the Eastover Community Center. Coalition members decided to retain Falcon Mayor Clifton Turpin Jr. as chairman and Hope Mills Mayor Jackie Warner as vice chair.

Fayetteville Cumberland County Human Relations Commission Chair Semone Pemberton gave a presentation about ways the Human Relations Commission can assist municipalities with conflict resolution and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Robert Van Geons gave an update on major projects in Cumberland County including the announcement Amazon is building a 1.3 million square foot fulfillment facility in the Military Business Park. The new operation will create more than 500 full-time jobs and hundreds of part-time opportunities.

Cumberland County Assistant County Manager for Environmental and Community Safety Tracy Jackson provided an update about County Inspections and Planning projects. Jackson reminded Coalition members of Planning and Inspections Self-Service portal, which offers online searches for existing permits, plans, inspections, code cases, requests and licenses. Self-Service, which went live in Summer 2021, also allows citizens to apply for a permit, plan or license online, instead of applying in person at the Planning and Inspections office.

Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation Director Michael Gibson gave an update on spring and summer sports. Gibson stressed the need for continued adherence to COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing and wearing masks.

Cumberland County Board of Commissioners Chairman Glenn Adams and Vice Chairwoman Dr. Toni Stewart also attended the Mayors Coalition meeting.

The mayors of Eastover, Falcon, Fayetteville, Godwin, Hope Mills, Linden, Spring Lake, Stedman and Wade and the chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners make up the Cumberland County Mayors Coalition. The Mayors Coalition meets quarterly. The next meeting is May 6 at the Cumberland County Department of Social Services conference room.
