Performs a variety of tasks associated with the preparation of simple foods, serving prepared foods and beverages and cleaning food service trays, pans, dishes and work areas. Sets up and replenishes food service counters and steam tables. Assists handicapped patients. Transports patient trays. Portions, and assembles salads and desserts for regular and modified diets. Prepares sandwich bar with sandwich and salad items. Greets customers and serves customer at the sandwich bar. Assists Grab-N-Go cashier with stocking and supplying food items. Performs a variety of duties to facilitate the maintenance and cleanliness of the area to which assigned. Washes dishes either manually or by use of mechanical equipment; disassembles, cleans and reassembles dishwashing machine after use. Sets up dining room for service. When necessary, operates a computer cash register for dining food sales. Picks up pre-counted cash drawer and verifies money.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Ability to perform the duties of the food service worker without more than normal supervision.
SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE: Skill to perform tasks with several steps and/or use judgment in a sequence of tasks. Ability to serve uniform individual portions and to avoid distraction when several people ask for different items at the same time. working knowledge of sanitation and safety techniques. Knowledge of basic arithmetic in order to complete assignments requiring the counting and adding of numbers of items such as plates, silverware, glasses, etc.
RESPONSIBILITY: The supervisor provides specific oral and written instructions when changes or new assignments are made. The employee uses judgment in deciding that the standards of sanitation, attractiveness, timeliness, courtesy, etc., are met in direct serving and individual portioning. The employee is responsible for the correct operation and care of equipment. The supervisor observes work and periodically checks to see that work is done on time and according to instructions.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Exerts moderate physical effort in lifting and carrying items weighing from 16-44 lbs. Work involves prolonged standing and walking, mainly on concrete floors. Pushes loaded tray carts on elevators and to wards, then delivering patient trays to patients bed stand with training.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed predominantly in noisy kitchen and dining room areas. Incumbent is subject to injuries from equipment used and is exposed to dirt, cleaning chemicals, grease and water in cleaning tasks. Incumbent is subject to extremes in temperatures when bringing supplies from walk-in refrigerators. Wears safety shoes and other protective items as required.
