Greensboro City Council approved the sale of 734 S. Elm Street to Lidle for the purpose of building and operating a grocery store in the South Elm Street Redevelopment Plan area during its February 15 meeting. The grocery store would be full-size, between 25,000-36,000 square feet, and include parking. The need for a grocery has been a point in public conversation regarding plans for the area and the area is in a food desert as defined by the US Department of Agriculture.
Council also approved a revision to the Code of Ordinances to create a new category of on-street, controlled parking in areas zoned Traditional Neighborhood to address concerns related to on-street parking access in the Southside neighborhood. There will be a controlled parking permit that allows both residential and small business parking permits to be issued by the City Manager.

In the Consent Agenda, Council renewed a lease agreement with Bryan Park Golf LLC for the management and operations of Bryan Park golf facilities. The Bryan Park complex includes two award-winning 18-hole golf courses, a restaurant, pro shop, practice putting facility, practice range, tennis courts and the Bryan Park Enrichment Center. A budget of $99,000 was established for the Old Battleground Road Sidepath Project, which will upgrade an existing sidewalk to greenway standards and make pedestrian bridge improvements on Old Battleground Road between Lake Brandt Road and just north of Horse Pen Creek Road. This project will improve safety and comfort for users of this popular Bicentennial Greenway connector route and upgrade what is currently a bottleneck between existing Bicentennial Greenway sections on both ends of the project.
