• USDA removes 'moderation' from dietary guidelines on alcohol (spectrumlocalnews.com) — New federal dietary guidelines now tell Americans simply to drink less alcohol, dropping the old “moderation” definition, and Greensboro experts worry the vaguer language could confuse people. Local bar managers on Spring Garden Street say they’re already seeing Gen Z customers drink less, even as North Carolina data show alcohol still causes thousands of deaths and billions in economic losses. 
• USA Swimming Announces Five Sites For 2026 Futures Championships (swimswam.com) — Greensboro will host one of USA Swimming’s 2026 Futures Championship meets at the Greensboro Aquatic Center from July 29–August 1, bringing top regional swimmers back to the city. The Futures series is an intermediate step between Sectionals and national-level meets, with unchanged time standards except for new 50-meter events tied to the LA 2028 Olympics.
• Duke Energy lays groundwork for new Triad nuclear facility (nsjonline.com) — A proposed Duke Energy nuclear reactor at Belews Creek, just outside Greensboro, could become the Triad’s first nuclear facility and eventually replace aging coal units there. The project is still at an early regulatory stage, drawing both strong environmental opposition and support from some policy analysts who see nuclear as key to meeting North Carolina’s long‑term energy and carbon‑reduction goals.
