The obituary reflects on his Army service, decades of football coaching, love of the outdoors, and the deep sense of belonging he found after moving to Hatteras Island with his wife, Leslie.

• Dec. 15 update on Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Restoration Project (outerbanksvoice.com) — Major restoration work at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is moving forward, with the new first-order Fresnel lens now fully fabricated and masonry repairs largely complete. Metal components are being rebuilt offsite, stone repairs are underway, and landscape and fencing work around the keepers’ quarters continues. There’s still no firm completion date, but the project aims to leave the lighthouse more resilient than ever.
