Here are the top three stories in Mooresville today:

  1. Detective Garron Lawing of the Mooresville Police Department has been promoted to sergeant. Sgt. Lawing will serve as a sregrant in the Criminal Investigations Unit. According to a Facebook post from MPD, prior to beginning his law enforcement career Sgt. Lawing served in the Army National Guard as a medic in Iraq. He has been with the Mooresville Police Department since 2020 and has over 11 years of law enforcement service. Sgt. Lawing was named the Exchange Club Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for 2021 for his outstanding work in investigating numerous cases of sexual exploitation crimes against children and bringing the responsible offenders to justice in both state and federal courts. Congratulations, Sgt. Lawing! MPD is lucky to have you on the force.(Mooresville Police Department via Facebook)
  2. Libraries and librarians are an integral part of communities. They are often families' first stops when they move to a new area and children's first introduction to books and activities. So, if you have a favorite Mooresville Public Library librarian, please nominate them for the #ILoveMyLibrarian award from the ALA! Your librarian could receive $5,000 and the recognition of a lifetime. Submit your nomination by Friday, September 30! https://bit.ly/3yiyT9C" (Mooresville Public Library via Facebook)
  3. The July 5 Mooresville Board of Commissioners meeting discussed development plans for the 30-plus acres at the corner of N.C. 150 and Perth Road and the inevitable increase of traffic in the area if the development, to be known as Alton Village, moves forward. According to the Lake Norman Publications article, "Peggy Brotherton and her family have owned the majority of the parcel in question for more than 90 years, and in the last two decades, the Brotherton family has assembled an ownership group that has now applied to conditionally rezone the property to include a concept plan of 298 multi-family units, 47 townhomes and six commercial out parcels that will also include approximately four acres of tree protection, more than five acres of open space and about 2,600 linear feet of greenway. Thirteen citizens signed up to address commissioners at the meeting, 10 of which were in opposition to the development."(Lake Norman Publications)
