Here are the top three stories today in Mooresville:

  1. Cancer in Iredell County? The Daily Tar Heel article states that, "according to a 2019 report from the North Carolina Department of Human Health and Services, the rate of new thyroid cancer cases reported between 2005 and 2016 in Iredell County — where Mooresville is located — was higher compared to new cases from the state as a whole. In 2017, Susan Wind's 16-year-old daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Wind learned of three more people with cancer living on her street in Mooresville [and] over two dozen parents from her daughter's high school reached out to her about their children's cancer cases. Now working as an environmental activist, Wind said she eventually learned about coal ash stored at Duke Energy's Marshall Steam Station, a four-unit power plant that uses coal and natural gas in Catawba County. Wind is organizing and leading a national protest on Sept. 20 at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., in response to the lack of action against coal ash in the country. Despite elevated rates of different types of cancer in specific areas, there are no officially proven cancer clusters in North Carolina." (The Daily Tar Heel)
  2. Did you know that September is National Suicide Prevention Month? 3. According to the Mooresville Tribune, "the General Federation of Women’s Club of North Carolina (GFWC of NC) Statesville Woman’s Club recently held its September meeting at which the members brought feminine hygiene products for the Red Cart Project that’s promoted by The Kindness Closet based out of Mooresville and the United Way of Iredell County to help end period poverty among middle and high school students in the Iredell-Statesville Schools. Luanne Luby, vice chair of The Kindness Closet, was in attendance to pick up the donation. "(Mooresville Tribune)
