Mooresville's 2021 St. Patrick's Day Parade Canceled

MOORESVILLE, NC — The 2021 Mooresville St. Patrick's Day Parade is canceled.

The annual holiday tradition that brings crowds to Downtown Mooresville to see Irish Pipe bands, Irish dancers, and green cars won't take place this year due to current statewide coronavirus restrictions, according to Downtown Mooresville.

Last week, North Carolina businesses, such as bars, restaurants, gyms and salons, got more breathing room as coronavirus restrictions eased up across the state. When it comes to parades and festivals, however, there was little reprieve. "Outdoor parades, street fairs, and festivals are subject to the mass gathering limit of no more than 50 individuals," Cooper's office said.

The American celebration of St. Patrick's Day started as a minor religious holiday in 1631, according to National Geographic. The church declared it a feast day, and over time the day became increasingly associated with Irish-American tradition.

The annual holiday is celebrated on March 17 as it is the traditional death date of Saint Patrick.
The color green didn't become connected with the day until the Irish Rebellion of 1798 — when Irish soldiers chose to wear green — since it was the color that most contrasted with the red British uniforms.
