Here are the top three stories in Mooresville today:

  1. Mooresville Graded School District (MSGD) Online Academy Teacher of the Year is Amy Smith, who incidentally is also an MSGD alumnus. According to a Facebook post from the MSGD, "Smith has been an integral part of the MOA from teaching to leading the STEAM TEAM. It is no wonder that her peers selected her as the MOA Teacher of the Year!" A veteran teacher with 20 years of experience, Smith reportedly stresses that her educational philosophy, like her teaching, has evolved over the years. Simply put, her philosophy of education is to be the type of teacher that she would want her own children to have. As a mother of two children with very different abilities and needs, she understands that if education is individualized to a learner's needs, that child will flourish! The post states, "we are proud of this former Blue Devil and grateful she returned to give back to MGSD through her amazing teaching!" (Mooresville Chamber of Commerce via Facebook)
  2. Bigger and better is how Pie in The Sky Pizza is returning to downtown Mooresville filling what it is calling its ‘dream spot.' There will be more bar options, twice the pizza ovens and a larger dining room area. Who could ask for more? According to the Charlotte Observer, Pie in The Sky Pizza will be taking over the former Kim’s Cleaners site at 250 S. Main St., less than two blocks away from its original location. (Charlotte Observer)
  3. Did you know that as of Wednesday, July 27 thousands of North Carolina felons can now register and vote? According to the Mooresville Tribune, "tens of thousands of people serving punishments for felony convictions in North Carolina but who aren’t behind bars can now register to vote and cast ballots this fall after an appeals court ruling. The change proceeds from litigation challenging a 1973 law that prevents someone convicted of a felony from having voting rights restored while they are still on probation, parole or post-release supervision. A panel of trial judges struck down the 1973 law in March, declaring it violates the state constitution largely because it discriminates against Black residents. The state Supreme Court agreed in May to hear an appeal of that decision, and the case remains pending. But the justices didn’t touch a Court of Appeals ruling that prevented registration requests from the felons who weren’t in prison or jail from being fulfilled only through Tuesday. So these applicants — for now and unless the Supreme Court reverses the trial court ruling — will be able to vote, beginning with the November general election." (Mooresville Tribune)
