Town Of Mooresville Warns Of Water Discoloration, Says It's Safe

Mooresville officials say the town's water is safe to drink. Here's what they're saying about the water discoloration reported today.

MOORESVILLE, NC —The "slight discoloration" of municipal water is a result of elevated iron levels in Lake Norman, the Town of Mooresville said Thursday.

"There is no issue with the water quality, and the water remains safe to drink," the town said in a statement via social media.

Here's what the Town of Mooresville said about the discoloration:
"After continued testing of water throughout our distribution system (raw water intake, water treatment plant, actual household distribution sites), we have detected slightly elevated levels of iron in the water coming from our raw water source (Lake Norman). While iron can change the color of water, it is not harmful to your health.

Iron is the fourth most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. It is an essential metal in the body, and, in fact, many people take iron supplements based on individual health needs. After working with the NC Department of Environmental Quality, we are making modifications to our current treatment process based on what has worked for other water systems that experience consistently higher levels of iron.

We understand that discoloration of water coming from your tap can be alarming. Please know the Town’s water quality continues to exceed the regulatory requirements of the State of North Carolina and the Environmental Protection Agency. We will continue to monitor our raw water intake levels and make ongoing adjustments, as needed, to ensure the quality of our drinking water."
