1. New Bern opens 'Home for Holidays' for displaced families (wnct.com) — New Bern families displaced from Trent Court by Hurricane Florence are finally moving into new replacement homes, marked by a “Home for the Holidays” ribbon-cutting. The New Bern Housing Authority and city partners say this is a major step in long-term recovery, with plans to demolish Trent Court and build more than 400 new housing units.
   

2. K9 Fredy retires after 7 years with New Bern police (witn.com) — A longtime New Bern Police K9, Fredy, is retiring after helping recover dozens of guns, several pounds of drugs, and assisting in more than 140 arrests. Due to serious heart and lung issues, city leaders are weighing a resolution to declare him medically unfit for service and transfer him to his handler for $1.
   

3. New Gold Star Families Memorial dedicated at Clarks Road rest area in Craven County (wcti12.com) — Families and veterans gathered at the Clarks Road Rest Area on Highway 70 for the dedication of a new Gold Star Families Memorial honoring those who lost loved ones in military service. New Bern Police Chief Patrick Gallagher joined Trent Woods leaders and veteran groups in recognizing the sacrifices of Gold Star families. The site now includes multiple memorial markers, creating a prominent local place of remembrance.
   

4. NC couple charged with felony safecracking and exploitation of the elderly (wavy.com) — An elderly, disabled New Bern resident was reportedly victimized in a larceny on Catfish Lake Road, leading to multiple felony charges against a Chowan County couple. Investigators say a stolen key was used to open the victim’s safe, and both suspects are now being held on substantial secured bonds while the case proceeds.
   

5. Vested Interest in K9s gifts protective vests to New Bern police dogs (wnct.com) — New Bern’s police K9s Chase, Strom, and Zorro are now protected with custom bullet- and stab-resistant vests donated by nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s. The U.S.-made gear, worth about $1,800 each, is designed to keep these highly trained dogs safer during dangerous operations while they support New Bern officers in the field.
