Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Twenty-year-old Landen Glass, a Virginia native, faces new charges after being accused of hitting and killing 11-year-old Hailey Brooks at the Raliegh Christmas parade when he lost control of his truck while pulling a float. According to WTVD-TV, "Glass's lawyer appeared in court on his behalf. Glass faces a new felony count of involuntary manslaughter." (WTVD-TV)
- You are not imagining it! The allergy season here in Raleigh has been extended. Many say that this is linked to climate change and global warming. The allergy season is typically between the last freeze in spring and the first freeze in fall. The number between those two occurrences has lengthened over the years leaving more time for allergens to pollute the air for those allergic to them. According to Axios, "Allergy season increased by 15 days on average between 1970 and 2021 across about 200 U.S. cities. From 1990 to 2018, pollen counts increased by 21 percent nationwide." (Axios)
- An accident involving an all-terrain vehicle took the lives of two people Sunday evening. According to WRAL News, "The accident happened at the intersection of Poole Road and Russ Street around 6:56 p.m. Taylor Williams, 24, was driving his car when he made a left turn from Russ Street onto Poole Road. Keevin Epps, 36, was driving an ATV northwest on Poole Road with Jayah Jackson, 18, as a passenger. Epps and Jackson were not wearing safety helmets. As Williams was making the turn, Epps hit Williams’ car. Epps and Jackson were ejected from the ATV and died due to their injuries. The driver of the other car involved did not report any injuries."
