📰 News we're reading

1. Wake could put student enrollment caps on these 18 schools in 2026. See the list (newsobserver.com) — Wake County is planning 2026–27 enrollment caps that will still affect several Raleigh schools, including Abbotts Creek, Beaverdam, River Bend and Rogers Lane elementaries. With district enrollment down but some campuses over capacity, officials propose removing caps at five non-Raleigh schools while newly capping Zebulon Elementary and keeping limits at multiple crowded Raleigh-area campuses.

2. $500,000 grant funds new Raleigh DWI Unit, NCDOT says (cbs17.com) — Raleigh drivers will soon see a new police DWI Unit on the roads, funded by a more than $553,000 state grant to target impaired driving. Three officers, new equipment, and public education across Wake County will support the effort, which launches alongside stepped-up holiday patrols and checkpoints through early January.

3. Raleigh police are warning of a rise in porch piracy this holiday season (cbs17.com) — Raleigh police are seeing a spike in porch package thefts just days before Christmas and are urging residents to change how they receive deliveries. Neighbors are reporting stolen gifts on social media, while officers recommend options like workplace delivery, signature requirements, or pickup locations to keep holiday orders out of thieves’ hands.

4. Raleigh student used active shooter training to hide for hours during Brown University shooting (wral.com) — A Raleigh native and Leesville Road High School graduate used her active-shooter training to hide for hours during the deadly Brown University shooting, and is now hurrying home for the holidays. Another local connection, a recent Durham Academy graduate, was critically injured and has undergone surgery, underscoring how this out-of-state tragedy is deeply affecting Triangle families.
