Pedestrian hit and killed in Raleigh early Christmas morning, police say (heraldsun.com) — Raleigh police say a 27-year-old man died after being struck by a car while running in the middle lane of Tryon Road near Dillard Drive early Christmas morning. Investigators note the area’s lack of streetlights and the victim’s dark clothing made him hard to see, and the cooperating driver has not been cited as the investigation continues. Impairment is not suspected.
   

2. New Raleigh residents enjoy first southern Christmas (cbs17.com) — Newcomers to Raleigh spent a warm, 70-degree Christmas exploring Dorothea Dix Park and discovering why the city feels so welcoming compared with their snowy Midwestern hometowns. They rave about Raleigh’s walkability, food scene, and friendly neighbors, echoing a recent study that ranked the city No. 1 nationwide for new college grads finding jobs.

Ukrainian school in Raleigh brings together refugees, longtime immigrants to keep culture alive (scdailygazette.com) — A Ukrainian Saturday school at a Raleigh church is helping refugee and longtime immigrant families preserve their language, art, and holiday traditions while they rebuild their lives here. Parents describe how the Ridge Road Baptist Church program has rapidly improved their children’s Ukrainian skills and created a tight-knit community. Organizers also see the school as part of a global effort to protect Ukrainian culture.
   

4. How to prevent a house fire during the holiday season (abc11.com) — Raleigh-area residents are being urged by the Red Cross of the Greater Triangle to take extra care with heaters, cooking, and holiday decorations as home fires spike during the colder holiday months. With a 26% increase in fires since November and one to two blazes daily in the Triangle, officials stress keeping trees and candles away from heat and checking smoke alarms.

Here's peek inside (newsobserver.com) — A Raleigh couple spent years and significant savings to move and restore a historic modernist home from Country Club Hills to a lot beside their West Raleigh house, with help from the city’s Preservation Loan Fund. The reassembled Matsumoto-era residence near Lake Johnson now includes an efficiency apartment and may be rented as an Airbnb, preserving what they call a small but meaningful piece of Raleigh’s history.
