  1. New Hanover County's David Jordan, who has been serving a prison sentence for more than 30 years, was set to be released on Mar. 4, 2024, but because of the reissuing of Indecent Liberties With a Child arrest warrants from the early 1980s, his parole case has been terminated. Jordan's case will be reviewed for possible parole on Jan. 6, 2024, instead. (WWAY NewsChannel 3)
  2. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District has scheduled a public comment period during an open house, to be held Tuesday, Jun. 13, at the Union Station building of Cape Fear Community College. The public comment period is meant to offer members of the general public a say on the deepening of Wilmington Harbor. This also will be an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the project. The comment period will close on Jun. 30. (WECT)
  3. North Carolina's Bald cypress trees are some of the oldest living organisms in the world and are common throughout New Hanover, Sampson, Bladen, and Pender counties. However, extended, severe droughts that have become more common in the past several years are slated to get worse in the near future, setting up a potentially existential threat to the bald cypress tree population, which will also face rising sea levels, increased water salinity, and stronger, more frequent hurricanes. However, Conservationist Nathan Burmester, interviewed by Star News Online, is cautiously optimistic. (StarNewsOnline.com)
