  1. D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy is taking part in a pilot program introduced by the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) intended to give students an opportunity to identify and express themselves through music. In the hip-hop class for seventh and eighth graders, students are given the opportunity to create beats, write lyrics, create graffiti, and different arts within the hip-hop community and showcase it to an audience. In addition to helping students express themselves, this is designed to align with the Community Resiliency Model which allows students to track their nervous systems and bring their spirits and minds into the resiliency zone. 2. At the Mosley Career Readiness Academy graduation earlier this week, Jocelyn Garnica-Lopez from Ashley High School was named the final recipient of the "Remember Carly Rae" scholarship. Students throughout New Hanover County are awarded this $1,000 scholarship from the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation and Baron Family named after former Ashley High School student Carly Rae Baron who tragically lost her life in a shooting back in 2020. Recipients of the scholarship are students who are deemed to be great people and who care about others and their school work. (WECT)
  3. WWAY and other members of Wrightsville Beach and neighboring communities have been looking for updates surrounding the renourishment projects for filling the beach. More areas of the beach have had noticeably less beach than in the past, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is still searching for contractors to work on the beach at a set price, with hopes that a new contract will be awarded by this August and the renourishment will begin in November. Representative David Rouzer was seen supporting a bill in Washington this May to keep the renourishment project for the beach in place. (WWAY NewsChannel 3)
