- The Wilmington Police Department is sad to announce that its 22-year-old horse Crescent passed away unexpectedly over the weekend. Crescent was taken to N.C. State Veterinarian School on Saturday after a morning check-up uncovered that something was wrong with the horse; upon being seen by a doctor the situation was worse than originally expected. Crescent was a big part of the police department, partnering with Officer Jason Watts for 17 years and being part of the crew for several calls and public events. Crescent will be cremated and his remains will be brought back to the department. (Port City Daily)
- The Soaring As Eagles Outreach Ministry is continuing to educate students past the school year into the summer with the recent STEAM program that was created to show Wilmington kids what potential careers are in their futures at an early age. The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics program is for students in the fifth grade and up, and is slowly showing them different skills from financial to things that will actually apply to real-life scenarios as they get older. The program has already welcomed more than 60 kids for the summer; this past Saturday, students worked together to build a robot ball that was able to navigate through a maze built with Lego bricks. - Just ahead of Juneteenth, local volunteers honored their ancestors on Saturday by cleaning up the Maides Park Cemetery. This tradition has been going on for the past three years, as the group of volunteers partners with the Historic Wilmington Foundation to honor those who came before them. This year saw nearly double the amount of volunteers from last year. (WWAY NewsChannel 3)
